Iberia Plus Avios Program: Everything You Need to Know

Founded in 1927, Iberia started out with a single flight route between Madrid and Barcelona, the two largest cities in Spain. Today, Iberia is the flagship carrier of Spain with its headquarters and the main hub at Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport (MAD).

In 2011, Iberia joined forces with British Airways to create International Airlines Group (IAG), and the group grew even larger in 2015 when it acquired Ireland’s flagship carrier, Aer Lingus.

All three airlines still operate under their own original brands and have their own frequent-flyer programs. However, all of their loyalty programs share the same rewards currency: Avios. As of March 22, 2022, Qatar Airways also uses Avios as its rewards currency.

You can both earn and spend Avios with any of the four aforementioned airlines, but your Avios are going to have a different value depending on which of these four airlines you redeem them with. That being said, the fact that you can redeem Avios with four different airline loyalty programs greatly widens your options when searching for redemptions.

Let’s find out how to earn and redeem Avios through the Iberia Plus rewards program. We’ll also briefly discuss how to move Avios between the four frequent-flyer programs that share this currency.

Iberia Plus Overview

Iberia operates flights to about 120 destinations worldwide, most of which are within Europe. However, due to Iberia’s position as a part of IAG and a member of the Oneworld alliance, the airline’s reach is nearly limitless. In fact, Iberia joined Oneworld in September 1999, only a few months after the alliance became operational. Today, Oneworld has a strong presence in North America, Europe, Australia and Asia.

As part of Oneworld, Iberia Plus members can earn Avios on flights with any of the other members as well as redeem their Avios for award flights with any of those airlines.

On top of that, Oneworld has its own elite status program. If you earn elite status with Iberia Plus (or any other Oneworld member), you’ll automatically earn elite status with Oneworld as well.

In addition to earning Avios for flying with Iberia or one of its many airline partners, you can earn Elite Points that can help you get closer to achieving elite status with Iberia Plus. You can also earn Avios in many other ways through Iberia Plus, such as signing up for a co-branded Iberia credit card, renting a car, shopping online and more. The only way to earn Elite Points is by actually flying.

In terms of redemption options that are available through Iberia Plus, you have several. However, the best way to get the most value out of your Avios is by booking award flights with Iberia or one of its partners. You can also find award charts for Iberia and each of its partners on Iberia’s website, making it easy to figure out how many Avios a certain award flight will cost.

Iberia Plus Elite Status

The Iberia Plus program has three yearly elite status tiers and two lifetime elite status tiers. Yearly elite status tiers can be earned either by accumulating a certain number of Elite Points or by completing a certain number of flight segments. Fortunately, you don’t have to meet both benchmarks to earn elite status.

When it comes to earning lifetime elite status, you can do so only by earning a certain number of Elite Points over the course of your lifetime. However, once you earn lifetime elite status, you’ll have that status for life.

Here are the three yearly elite status tiers and the Elite Points or segments required to earn them:

• Plata (Silver): 1,100 Elite Points or 25 flight segments
• Oro (Gold): 2,250 Elite Points or 50 flight segments
• Platino (Platinum): 6,250 Elite Points

As you may have noticed, you can’t earn Platino status with flight segments. You have to earn 6,250 Elite Points to earn this status tier. A year in the Iberia Plus elite status program starts on April 1 and ends on March 31. If you earn either Plata or Oro elite status, you’ll keep that status through March 31 of the following year. For instance, if you earn Plata elite status on April 15, 2023, your status status will be valid through March 31, 2024.

The rules are a little bit different with Platino status. When you earn Platino status, you’ll retain it for two years instead of one. For instance, if you earn Platino elite status on April 15, 2023, your status will be valid through March 31, 2025.

To retain your Platino elite status after the two years are up, you have two options: either earn 6,250 Elite Points during the second year of your Platino status or earn 12,500 over the two years of your Platino status. That means that you could earn 7,000 Elite Points in the first year and 5,500 Elite Points in the second year and still retain your status.

When it comes to lifetime elite status, there are two tiers within the Iberia Plus program, both of which can be achieved only by earning a certain number of Elite Points over the course of your life. Don’t worry about keeping track of how many Elite Points you’ve earned in your life—Iberia will do that for you.

Here are the two lifetime elite status tiers and how many Elite Points you’ll need to earn in your life to achieve them:

• Infinita: 125,000 Elite Points
• Infinita Prime: 200,000 Elite Points

As previously mentioned, once you achieve either of these elite status tiers, you’ll have that status for life even if you never earn another Elite Point.

In terms of how many Elite Points you’ll earn for each flight, Iberia publishes a zone-based earnings chart for paid flights that it operates. Here’s how many Elite Points you’ll earn on Iberia-operated flights.

Of course, because Iberia is based in Spain, all domestic flights are going to be within Spain. If you want to see which countries fall into which zones, you can visit Iberia’s site.

Now that you understand how to earn each elite status, let’s take a look at the benefits that come with each status tier.

As you can see, the Iberia Plus elite status program is pretty average compared to other airlines. The most impressive perks that come with Plata and Oro status are probably the increased Avios earnings rates and the increased free baggage allowance, which allows you to bring an additional piece of luggage on Iberia-operated flights only (terms apply).

Platino status comes with a few more impressive perks, including two free upgrades to business class per status term and a gift of 22,500 Avios. On top of that, both Oneworld Sapphire and Emerald status (which are available with Iberia Oro and Platino status, respectively) come with complimentary access to oneworld VIP lounges, which is an exciting perk.

How to Earn Iberia Avios

Among airline rewards currencies, Avios are one of the easiest to rack up because you can earn them by flying with Aer Lingus, Qatar Airways, Iberia and British Airways, all of which use Avios as their currency. On top of that, you can elect to earn Avios on flights with most partners of the four aforementioned airlines.

When it comes to earning Avios through Iberia, there are ways to do so without ever setting foot on a plane, including signing up for an Iberia co-branded credit card or renting a car. Let’s take a look at all the ways that you can earn Avios through Iberia.

Flying with Iberia

Each time you get on an Iberia-operated flight, you can earn Avios. The specific number of Avios that you’ll earn depends on the amount of money that you spend on your ticket. According to Iberia’s website, this applies to “net spending, including ancillary purchases and carrier imposed charges but excluding taxes and fees.”

When you sign up for Iberia Plus, you’ll start off by earning 5X Avios per €1 spent on your fare. However, if you have elite status with Iberia, your earnings will be higher. Here’s how much you’ll earn at each elite status tier.

• Plata: 6X Avios per €1
• Oro: 7X Avios per €1
• Platino: 8X Avios per €1
• Infinita: 8X Avios per €1
• Infinita Prime: 8X Avios per €1

In addition to the earnings bonuses that you can get from being an elite flyer, you also can earn bonus Avios for flying on certain routes. Latin American routes earn 2X bonus Avios per €1 spent (meaning that Platino elite status members would earn 10X Avios per €1 on Latin American routes). Plus, all Air Shuttle flights (which are Iberia’s short-haul flights between Madrid and Barcelona) earn 1X bonus Avios per €1.

So, as an example, let’s say that you purchase a one-way flight on Iberia for €89 on a Latin American route and you have Oro status with Iberia Plus. You decide to buy the “Flexible Ticket” option (which allows you to get larger voucher refunds and change your flight once for free), which costs another €39.

Because the “Flexible Ticket” option is considered an ancillary purchase, you can earn Avios on those €39, making your total eligible spending €128. Now, you need to multiply €128 by 9 Avios (7X Avios for having Oro status plus 2X bonus Avios on Latin American routes), which comes out to 1,152 Avios.

It’s worth noting that flights on Iberia Express and Air Nostrum (which are both part of Iberia Group) both earn Avios the same way that flights on Iberia do.

Flying with Partner Airlines

You also can earn Avios for flying with any of Iberia’s partner airlines, whether or not it’s a member of Oneworld. The number of Avios that you’ll earn with partner airlines depends on the specific airline you’re flying with, the fare class you’re booked in and the mileage of your flight (unlike earning Avios on Iberia flights, which is based on your spending).

Each partner airline has its own earnings chart, which you can find on Iberia’s website. As an example, here’s the earnings chart for Alaska Airlines:

Before you decide to earn Avios on a partner flight, it’s always a good idea to compare how many Avios you’d earn to how much you’d earn in that airline’s currency. It’s also worth considering which of the two currencies you’d get more benefit from, depending on which airlines you fly with most frequently.

Credit Card Spending

As with most frequent-flyer programs, one of the best ways to rack up Avios quickly is by signing up for a co-branded credit card. These credit cards usually have large welcome bonuses and allow you to earn Avios for making everyday purchases, and Iberia’s co-branded credit card is no different.

The Iberia Visa Signature® Card is offered by Chase and has a $95 annual fee, which you can easily offset using some of this card’s benefits. First off, you’ll earn Avios every time you use this card for an eligible purchase. Here are the Iberia Visa Signature Card’s bonus categories.

• 3X Avios per dollar spent on purchases with British Airways, Aer Lingus, Iberia and Level
• 2X Avios per dollar spent on hotel accommodations when purchased directly with the hotel
• 1X Avios per dollar spent on all other purchases

This card also offers a generous welcome bonus that can help you rack up a large number of Avios in a short period of time. Here are some of the other benefits that come with this card.

• A 10% discount when you purchase Iberia flights with cash through iberia.com/Chase10
• A discount voucher of $1,000 to use toward two tickets on the same flight for each year you make purchases of $30,000 on your card
• Baggage delay insurance, lost luggage reimbursement and other travel coverages
• No foreign transaction fee

While these benefits may sound somewhat enticing, keep in mind that the Avios currency is shared by Aer Lingus, British Airways and Qatar Airways. So, if your main goal is to earn Avios, you may want to consider getting a co-branded credit card from one of those other airlines instead.

Chase also offers the British Airways Visa Signature® Card, which is nearly identical to the Iberia Visa Signature Card with one main exception. While both cards allow you to earn a $1,000 voucher for companion travel after spending $30,000 in a year, Iberia’s voucher expires in 12 months whereas British Airways’s voucher expires in two years.

With that being said, if you frequently fly on Iberia, signing up for the Iberia Visa Signature Card might be a great idea. That 10% discount on Iberia flights through Chase can add up to big savings quickly.

It’s also worth mentioning that this card counts toward Chase’s 5/24 rule (which states that you can sign up for no more than five credit cards in a 24-month period to be approved for a new card from Chase). So, you may want to save those slots for other cards that offer better benefits and spending bonuses.

You can combine your Avios that you earn amongst different programs to consolidate them as well.

Transferable Points Programs

One of the best ways to boost your Avios balance is by transferring points from other programs that are partnered with Avios. At the moment, American Express Membership Rewards, Chase Ultimate Rewards and Bilt Rewards all allow you to convert their points to Iberia Plus Avios at a 1:1 ratio. All transfers must be in increments of 1,000 points.

So, unless you fly with Iberia frequently, it’s probably better to prioritize getting a credit card that earns Amex Membership Rewards points (such as the American Express® Gold Card), Chase Ultimate Rewards points (such as the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card) or Capital One Rewards miles (such as the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card) instead of the British Airways Visa Signature Card. These rewards currencies are much more flexible and can be transferred to a multitude of airline rewards programs.

It’s also worth keeping an eye out for transfer bonuses. Sometimes these transferable points programs will offer a bonus percentage or a fixed number of bonus points for transferring into Iberia Plus. These deals can help you get a lot more value out of your points.

There are also a few hotel loyalty programs that allow you to transfer their points to Iberia Plus. For instance, you can convert Marriott Bonvoy points to Iberia Plus Avios at a 3:1 ratio. Plus, you’ll get an additional 5,000 Avios for every 60,000 Bonvoy points transferred. However, even with that transfer bonus, this is typically a low-value use for your Bonvoy points.

Accor ALL allows you to convert points to Avios at a 1:1 ratio in increments of 3,000. Best Western Rewards allows you to transfer 5,000 points in exchange for 1,000 Avios. And IHG One Rewards allows you to transfer 10,000 points in exchange for 2,000 Avios.

You’re usually much better off spending your hotel points within their respective rewards programs. However, if you don’t plan on staying at any hotels in the future, transferring your points to Iberia might be a decent way to get some value out of them.

Hotel Stays

In addition to transferring points from hotel loyalty programs, you can earn Avios by booking stays with certain partner hotel chains and booking agencies. Unfortunately, you’ll be forgoing the opportunity to earn hotel points on those stays.

In general, you’re better off earning hotel points for your stays (if you’re going to use them). However, if you have no use for hotel points and you’d much rather earn Avios, this could be a good option for you. Here are some of the hotel chains and booking agencies that allow you to earn Avios directly for staying with them.

• Best Western: 500 Avios for each booking made at bestwestern.com
• Booking.com: 1X Avios per €1 spent through hotel.iberia.com
• IHG One Rewards: 2X Avios per $1
• Marriott Bonvoy: 2X Avios for every $1
• Melia Rewards: 3X Avios per €1
• NH Hotel Group: Up to 450 Avios per night

Again, if you think that you’ll use hotel loyalty points in the future, you’re probably better off earning hotel points than Avios.

Car Rentals

Iberia also has partnerships with car rental companies Avis and Budget that allow you to earn Avios for qualifying car rentals.

With Avis, you can earn 5X Avios per €1 spent at leisure rates and 2X Avios per €1 spent at corporate rates, both up to a maximum of 10,000 Avios per rental. Plus, by joining the Avis Preferred program, you can earn 1,000 bonus Avios for your first rental.

If you’re renting from Budget, you can earn 2X Avios per €1 spent up to a maximum of 10,000 Avios per rental. Certain rentals with Budget aren’t eligible to earn Avios, including:

• Hires with driver
• Van hires
• Prestige vehicle hires
• Hires at rates for travel agents or the tourist industry
• Hires with AWD/BCD rates from assistance or replacement companies
• Hires at Budget employee rates
• Hires with net rates

Shopping Online

Like most other airline rewards programs, Iberia Plus has its own shopping portal that allows you to earn Avios for making purchases with certain merchants. You can browse through products from more than 300 brands at the Iberia Plus Store, select the store you want to make your purchases from and earn up to 25X Avios per €1 spent.

The specific number of Avios you’ll earn depends on which merchant you’re shopping with. If you’re planning on making some online purchases anyway, shopping through the Iberia Plus Store is a great way to earn some extra Avios. Some of the brands that you can earn Avios for shopping with include:

• Adidas
• Apple
• Hunter
• LEGO
• Lenovo
• Michael Kors
• Oakley
• Ralph Lauren
• Ray Ban
• Sonos
• Sunglass Hut
• The North Face

Fill Out Surveys

You can earn Avios by filling out surveys through Avios For Thoughts. Just for signing up and completing your Welcome Tutorial will earn you 100 Avios. Then, you’ll earn 500 Avios when you fill out your first survey. After that, you’ll earn between 20 and 350 Avios for every survey you fill out, depending on the length of the survey.

Purchase Avios

Iberia gives you the option to purchase Avios. Unfortunately, it’s usually not a good deal. The larger the quantity of Avios you purchase at once, the cheaper the cost per Avios. However, even at the largest purchase quantity available, you’re still paying more than 2.7 cents apiece. It can sometimes make sense to purchase Avios, but be sure that both the flight is available to book with points and that the cash price isn’t more than what you would pay in points before purchasing.

Still, if you have a redemption in mind that you’re just a few thousand points short of, it may be worth purchasing Avios in some cases. However, the fewest number of Avios you can purchase at once is 2,000 for a price of $80, which comes out to a cost of 4 cents apiece. Once again, you should avoid purchasing Avios (or pretty much any airline rewards currency) unless it’s absolutely necessary.

How to Redeem Iberia Plus Avios

Of course, the most straightforward way to redeem Avios through Iberia Plus is to purchase award tickets on Iberia-operated flights. However, that’s far from the only way to use your Avios once you rack up a balance. Since the Avios currency is shared by Iberia, British Airways, Aer Lingus and Qatar Airways, it’s easy to use them to purchase flights with any of those airlines or any of their partners.

On top of that, there are some interesting ways to redeem your Avios that don’t involve stepping on a plane. While flying is typically the best way to get the most value out of your Avios, you may want to consider one of these alternatives if you don’t have any desire to fly in the near-future.

Let’s look at all the different ways to redeem Avios with Iberia Plus.

Flying with Iberia

One of the best ways to redeem Avios is by booking award flights on Iberia planes. To price its own award flights, Iberia uses two distance-based award charts in which flights in certain distance ranges are organized into “bands.”

Iberia has one award chart for flights during peak times and another for flights during off-peak times. The redemption rates on both charts are for one-way flights.

A round-trip ticket will cost exactly twice the stated rate. If you want to see which dates are considered peak and off-peak, Iberia has a calendar posted on its website.

These award charts have some exceptions, meaning that not all flights whose distance corresponds to a certain band are included in that band. For the most part, you can predict the price in Avios of a certain Iberia award flight by searching the distance of your flight using a tool such as the Great Circle Mapper and then referencing these award charts as well as the peak/off-peak calendar.

Iberia also has posted award charts for upgrades to and from each fare class and during peak and off-peak times. You can find the upgrade award charts on Iberia’s website.

It’s worth noting that all redemption rates for flights and upgrades on Iberia Express and Air Nostrum are the same as redemption rates for Iberia flights and upgrades.

In general, you can find some great award flights on Iberia metal between the United States and Madrid, especially during off-peak times. You also can find a ton of value on short-haul flights around Spain. Because Iberia uses a distance-based award chart, it’s fairly easy to find sweet spots on short-distance flights that usually carry high cash prices.

Flying with Partner Airlines

In addition to redeeming your Avios with Iberia, you can use your Avios to purchase award flights operated by any of Iberia’s partner airlines. That includes the Avios-earning family of airlines (Qatar Airways, Aer Lingus and British Airways), Oneworld members and even Iberia’s non-alliance partners.

Iberia has a separate award chart for each of its airline partners, all of which you can access on Iberia’s website. Partner award charts also typically include different rates for peak and off-peak times, which follow the same calendar as Iberia-operated flights.

You’ll notice that the website has award charts posted for many of Iberia’s Oneworld partners as well as separate award charts for individual partners that are members of Oneworld alliance, such as British Airways, Cathay Pacific and Qantas. You can use the standard Oneworld award chart for any Oneworld partner that doesn’t have its own dedicated award chart on Iberia’s website (such as Fiji Airways).

One of the best ways to use Iberia Plus Avios as a U.S.-based traveler is to book short-haul trips around the United States under 651 miles. According to Iberia’s award chart for American Airlines, all American Airlines flights in economy class shorter than 651 miles cost 6,000 Avios (or 12,500 Avios in business class). These redemptions can offer great value in some cases.

For instance, if you were to book a one-way award flight on American Airlines in basic economy from New York City (JFK) to Detroit (DTW), a route with a distance of 509 miles, it would cost 6,000 Avios. We searched the same flight on the American Airlines website for Feb. 16, 2023, and found that the cash rate for the same flight was $127.

In this case, you’d be getting more than 2.1 cents per Avios in value, which presents a pretty good value. There are plenty of sweet spots like this one when you book short-haul American Airlines flights in the U.S. with Avios through Iberia Plus.

Avios&Money

Iberia gives you the option to pay for flights using a combination of cash and Avios, a program called Avios&Money. Essentially, this program gives you several options for different combinations of cash and Avios that you can pay with. The idea is that you can reduce the cash price of the flight by paying more Avios.

In some cases, paying for flights this way can yield excellent value. In most cases, the more Avios you pay with, the better deal you’re going to get. However, this is not always the case, so it’s worth doing some calculations to determine which Avios-cash split offers the best value.

Booking Hotels, Cars and Experiences

If you’re interested in using your Avios for something other than a flight, you’ll need to go to Iberia’s website and locate the “Hotels, cars and experiences” page. Once you accept the “Terms & conditions” and click the “Continue” button, you’ll be asked to sign in using your Iberia Plus credentials. From there, you’ll be redirected to the Avios&Money portal where you can use your Avios to book hotels, cars, hotel and car packages and activities.

To book one of these options, you just choose which one you want to search for, your destination, your desired dates and the number of travelers, and click the “Search” button. Then you’ll be presented with a list of options and their prices in Avios as well as several options for combinations of Avios and cash.

Unfortunately, booking hotels, cars and experiences through Iberia’s Avios&Money portal typically yields a pretty low value per point. For instance, we found that you could book the TRYP by Wyndham New York City Times Square / Midtown on Jan. 28, 2023, for 31,650 Avios.

When we searched the same room on the same night on Wyndham’s website, we found that the cash rate was $169 without a deposit and $143.65 with a deposit required.

Either way, this redemption would give you a value of about 0.5 cent per Avios, which is a fairly low value for Avios.

When it comes to renting a car through Avios&Money, the story is pretty similar. You’re usually not going to find good value for your Avios by redeeming them this way, and you’re probably better off paying for your rental car with cash and saving your Avios for a rainy day.

We searched for a rental car at Portland International Airport from Feb. 4 to Feb. 5, 2023, and found a “Compact” option that cost 10,700 Avios for the day.

Then, we searched for the same car for the same dates on Budget’s website and found that the cash rate for the exact same rental would be $56.

In this case, you’d be getting a value of around 0.5 cent per Avios. Again, this is considerably lower value than what you can typically receive with Avios.

When it comes to redeeming your Avios for activities through Iberia’s Avios&Money portal, it’s equally hard to find good value for your Avios. However, there are some pretty interesting activities and experiences listed on the site that might be fun ways to use your Avios. For instance, they offer helicopter tours, tickets to museums, cruises, food tours, escape room tickets and so much more.

Donate to Charity

If you don’t have much use for your Avios or you’d rather use your Avios to benefit others, you might want to consider donating your Avios to one of the many charities that partner with Iberia. Currently, Iberia Plus members have the option to donate to 10 different charities, some of which are based in the airline’s home country of Spain and some of which are international organizations.

It’s worth nothing that donations of airline miles (or, in this case, Avios) aren’t eligible for tax deductions.

Combine Avios

One of the greatest advantages of the Avios currency is that you can combine Avios between accounts with the four different frequent-flyer programs. For instance, you can move your Avios from Iberia Plus to Aer Lingus AerClub. This gives you access to the entire list of airline partners for Aer Lingus, British Airways, Iberia and Qatar Airways.

All four airlines that use Avios have their own unique list of partners. So, transferring your Avios from one loyalty program to another might give you access to new partner award flights.

For instance, if you transfer your Avios from Iberia Plus to British Airways Executive Club, you’ll gain access to award flights from JetBlue (which aren’t available through Iberia Plus).

Another advantage of the Avios currency is that, if you have balances of Avios in separate accounts, you can combine them all into one account. For instance, if you have 150,000 Avios in your Aer Lingus AerClub account and 150,000 Avios in your Iberia Plus account, you can combine them both into one account for a total of 300,000 Avios.

If you want to move Avios between Iberia, British Airways and Aer Lingus, the easiest way to do so is by signing into Avios.com with your Aer Lingus AerClub credentials. If you want to move Avios to or from your Qatar Airways Privilege Club account, you’ll need to use British Airways as an intermediary, which can get a bit complicated.

The Bottom Line

One of the best features of the Iberia Plus program is the fact that its award charts are distance-based for both Iberia-operated flights and partner-operated flights. This means that it’s easy to find sweet spot redemptions on short-distance flights that usually have high cash prices (which there are many of around the United States). In particular, using Avios to purchase award flights with American Airlines within the U.S. is a great way to get a lot of value out of your Avios.

In terms of earning Avios through Iberia Plus, of course, the most straightforward way to do so is by flying with Iberia or one of its partners. If you fly with Iberia often, you may want to consider signing up for the Iberia Visa Signature Card, which can help you rack up Avios quickly with its generous welcome bonus and spending bonuses. However, it does count toward Chase’s 5/24 rule, so you may not want to sign up for the Iberia Visa Signature unless you fly with the airline frequently.

Iberia Plus is one of four airline loyalty programs that allows you to earn Avios (along with Qatar Airways, British Airways and Aer Lingus). So, if you’re a Spanish resident or you just fly with Iberia a lot, Iberia Plus is probably the best one of these programs for you. However, if your only concern is earning the Avios currency, then you may want to consider whether one of the other loyalty programs that earns Avios would be a better fit for you.

In general, Iberia Plus is best for people who fly in and out of Spain frequently and want to earn Avios while doing so. Apart from that, you’re probably better off focusing on other frequent-flyer programs.
