Headquartered in Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, American Airlines is one of the “Big 3” U.S. airlines, and an airline that most U.S.-based travelers are probably familiar with. There’s a lot to love about American Airlines, from its extensive route network to its excellent customer service and its forgiving cancellation policies. However, American Airlines isn’t an airline that’s known for providing a super-luxurious premium-cabin experiences (such as Qatar Airways Qsuites or ANA The Room).

Nonetheless, according to a 2025 Skytrax ranking, American Airlines did have the tenth-best business-class seat in the global airline industry. So, you can rest assured that you’ll be comfortable during an American Airlines business-class flight. Plus, American Airlines’ Flagship business-class product includes other impressive features, such as chef-inspired in-flight dining, an amenity kit full of high-quality self-care products, access to Flagship airport lounges and more.

But, of course, booking American Airlines business-class flights with cash can be rather expensive. So, if you want to experience American Airlines business class while keeping your out-of-pocket costs low, you can book these flights with points or miles.

In this article, we’ll identify some of the best frequent flyer programs through which to book American Airlines business-class award flights. We’ll also take a quick look at what you can expect when flying in American Airlines business class.

What to Expect in American Airlines Business Class

The business-class experience and amenities you’ll receive on American Airlines depend on the type of aircraft you’re flying on as well as the route you’re flying.

American Airlines’ premier business-class product is known as Flagship Business Plus, which is available on Boeing 777-200, Boeing 787-8 and Boeing 787-9 aircraft. This fare is essentially the same as Flagship Business fare with several additional perks, including:

  • Access to Flagship First dedicated check-in areas (only available at certain airports)
  • A third complimentary checked bag
  • Access to Flagship First Dining areas inside Flagship Lounges (only available in certain Flagship Lounges)

When flying in Flagship Business Plus, the onboard experience is the same as flying a Flagship Business fare. Flagship Business fares are available on Boeing 777-200, Boeing 777-300, Boeing 787-8, Boeing 787-9 and Airbus A321T aircraft.

These aircraft are primarily used for international routes and transcontinental routes (such as flights from New York to Los Angeles). Flagship Business service is also typically available on flights between the mainland U.S. and Hawaii.

Flagship Business seats can convert into lie-flat beds. The following chart includes the number of Flagship Business seats as well as the width of Flagship Business seats on each aircraft type:

Aircraft typeNumber of Flagship Business seatsWidth of Flagship Business seats

Boeing 777-2003721.9 inches
Boeing 777-3005220.5 inches
Boeing 787-82021 inches
Boeing 787-93021 inches

Once again, according to a 2025 Skytrax ranking, American Airlines Flagship Business class had the tenth-best business-class seat in the global airline industry. These seats are equipped with a fully closing privacy door, several storage spaces, an adjustable reading light and separate trays for drinks and meals.

Flagship seats also feature a seatback 4K personal entertainment screen that’s 17 inches diagonally on most aircraft types. This screen gives you access to a free library of movies, music, TV shows and more (including Apple TV and Apple Music). Plus, you’ll receive a pair of Bang & Olufsen headphones to use during your flight.

AAdvantage members also have access to free Wi-Fi onboard in Flagship Business class, which you can use on all of your devices. Plus, Flagship Business seats feature universal AC charging ports as well as USB-A and USB-C ports, ensuring you’ll be able to keep all of your devices charged throughout the flight.

Passengers in Flagship Business class will also receive an amenity kit upon boarding the plane. This kit contains sustainably sourced travel essentials and rotating skincare products from beauty brands like Joanna Vargas and Relevant. You’ll also receive a blanket, a cool-touch pillow and slippers to use throughout the flight.

Flagship Business passengers will be able to choose from several in-flight meal options, which vary by route. For example, some options on flights to Europe may include corn-fed tandoori chicken with basmati rice, spicy potato roesti and beef smoked Sunday roast. Some options on flights to Asia might include a Japanese bento box or Korean bibimbap. And flights to South America may include regional flavors like Caribbean red mojo sauce or Peruvian aji amarillo marinades.

Of course, American Airlines will also accommodate you if you have any allergies or dietary restrictions. They offer vegetarian, vegan, dairy-free, gluten-free, kosher, Muslim, Hindu, low-sodium, low-fat, diabetic and many more types of special meals.

To pair with your meal, you can select a beverage from American Airlines’ list of complimentary wines, spirits, beers and more. This list includes delicious and diverse red, white and sparkling wines from around the world, as well as premium beer from craft brewers. You can request a drink from this list at any time during the flight. Of course, you can also choose from non-alcoholic options like coffee, tea, juices and sodas.

Passengers ticketed in Flagship Business class will receive priority privileges at the airport, including priority check-in, priority security line and priority boarding. Plus, you’ll get your checked bags first when you land.

Before you take off, you’ll be able to access American Airlines Flagship airport lounges and Admirals Club airport lounges around the world. You’ll also be able to access the American Airlines Arrivals Lounge at London-Heathrow Airport.

And, because American Airlines is a member of Oneworld Alliance, you’ll be able to access Oneworld partner lounges around the world. To see if there’s a Oneworld Alliance partner lounge at a specific airport, you can use the Lounge Finder tool in the My10x web application.

It’s also worth noting that American Airlines offers business-class service on shorter-distance international flights (including flights between the U.S. and Bermuda, Canada, the Caribbean, Mexico, Puerto Rico and select South American cities).

The business-class cabins on these flights don’t offer lie-flat seats and you won’t receive an amenity kit. However, you will still enjoy many of the same amenities as in Flagship Business, including premium dining, complimentary beverages, an entertainment screen, complimentary in-flight Wi-Fi, priority privileges at the airport and airport lounge access.

Best Programs Through Which You Can Book American Airlines Business Class

Since American Airlines is a member of Oneworld Alliance, there are several partner frequent flyer programs through which you can book American Airlines business-class award flights. However, every frequent flyer program prices partner award flights differently. So, the same American Airlines business-class award may cost more miles through one program than another.

Also, some frequent flyer programs are much easier to earn miles with than others because they allow transfers from major U.S. credit card rewards programs.

With these factors in mind, let’s take a look at some of the best frequent flyer programs through which you can book American Airlines business-class awards.

Alaska Airlines Atmos Rewards

In many cases, the best frequent flyer program through which to book American Airlines business-class award flights is Alaska Airlines Atmos Rewards. This program prices American Airlines award flights according to a series of fixed distance-based award charts, which means you can often find high-value redemptions on American Airlines metal through this program. It’s important to note, however, that these award charts are “starting at” rates so they could vary.

For example, we found a round-trip American Airlines business-class award itinerary between Los Angeles (LAX) and New York (JFK) for a total of 70,000 miles and about $38 in taxes and fees. These flights also include Flagship business-class service.

Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan

If you were to book these same flights with cash through the American Airlines website, they would cost you about $2,447.

So, factoring in the taxes and fees you’d have to pay for the award flights, this redemption would give you a value of about 3.4 cents per mile, which is great. There are plenty of redemptions for American Airlines business-class awards available through the Atmos Rewards program that offer equal or even greater value.

The Alaska Airlines Atmos Rewards program is also a 1:1 transfer partner of Bilt Rewards, which means it’s very easy to earn Alaska miles if you have one of their credit cards.

Qantas Frequent Flyer

Another program that offers a decent amount of American Airlines business-class availability at favorable rates is Qantas Frequent Flyer. This program prices many American Airlines-operated award flights according to a fixed distance-based award chart, which means you can find outsized value (exceeding 1 cent per point) on certain American Airlines awards.

For example, we found a round-trip American Airlines business-class itinerary between New York (JFK) and San Francisco (SFO) for 138,400 points and about $12 in taxes and fees.

If you were to book the same flights on the same dates with cash through the American Airlines website, it would cost you about $2,347.

Thus, accounting for the taxes and fees that you’d have to pay for the award flight, this redemption would yield a value of about 1.7 cents per point, which is solid.

Another major advantage of the Qantas Frequent Flyer program is that it’s a 1:1 transfer partner of several major U.S. credit card rewards programs, including American Express Membership Rewards, Capital One Rewards and Citi ThankYou Rewards.

If you have the Brex Card, which is a business-focused card designed for startups, and you’re a Brex Exclusive member (which means you don’t use any other credit card), you can transfer Brex points to Qantas Frequent Flyer at a 1:1 ratio. All other members can transfer Brex points to airline partners at a 1.5:1 ratio.

Etihad Guest

Another frequent flyer program through which you can book American Airlines business-class awards at favorable rates is Etihad Guest. This program uses a fixed distance-based award chart to price all partner awards, which means you can often find outsized value (exceeding 1 cent per mile) on partner award flight redemptions, including American Airlines business-class flights.

For example, we found a round-trip American Airlines business-class award itinerary between Los Angeles (LAX) and Boston (BOS) for 120,000 miles plus about $103 in taxes and fees. These flights also feature Flagship Business-class service.

If you were to book the same flight itinerary with cash through the American Airlines website, it would cost you about $2,074.

Considering the taxes and fees you’d have to pay for the award flight, this redemption would give you a value of about 1.6 cents per mile, which is decent. There are many American Airlines business-class awards available through this program that offer equal or greater value.

Another major advantage of the Etihad Guest program is that it’s a 1:1 transfer partner of several major U.S. credit card rewards programs, including American Express Membership Rewards, Capital One Rewards and Citi ThankYou Rewards. This makes it easy to earn Etihad miles if you have a credit card from any of these issuers.

The Bottom Line

While American Airlines doesn’t currently rank among the top business-class products in the airline industry, the Dallas-Fort Worth-based airline has made major improvements to its Flagship Business-class service (which is available on international and transcontinental U.S. flights) over the past few years. This service includes premium amenities, like gourmet in-flight dining, complimentary alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, lie-flat seats, large 4K personal entertainment screens, airport lounge access and more.

Of course, booking American Airlines Flagship Business class tickets with cash can be rather costly. So, if you want to experience this product while keeping your out-of-pocket costs low, you can book American Airlines business-class award flights with points and miles through several different frequent flyer programs.
