American Express is making changes to two benefits of the The Business Platinum Card® from American Express, potentially reducing the value cardholders receive on everyday business expenses.

Starting February 17, 2027, the card’s up to $120 annual wireless credit and 2X Membership Rewards points on shipping purchases will be restricted to specific merchants. Currently, these benefits cover a broader range of eligible U.S. wireless and shipping providers. While the value of the wireless credit and the 2X earning rate aren’t changing, cardholders who use providers outside the new lists could miss out on statement credits and bonus points.

Under the updated terms, the wireless benefit will continue offering up to $10 in monthly statement credits (up to $120 annually), with enrollment required, but only for purchases made directly with these 11 approved providers:

  • Verizon
  • AT&T
  • T-Mobile
  • Frontier
  • Comcast
  • Charter
  • Spectrum Mobile
  • US Cellular
  • Optimum
  • Ultra Mobile
  • Mint Mobile

Meanwhile, the 2X shipping category will be limited to purchases made directly with these seven approved merchants:

  • UPS
  • FedEx
  • United States Postal Service (USPS)
  • Auctane
  • DHL
  • Worldwide Express
  • Old Dominion Freight Line, Inc.

The card’s 2X earning cap of up to $2 million in eligible shipping purchases per calendar year (then 1X thereafter) remains unchanged, as does its annual fee.

Our Take

These changes aren’t particularly surprising, but they’re another example of why cardholders need to pay attention to the fine print when evaluating premium credit cards. The Amex Business Platinum already carries a substantial annual fee, and limiting the merchants that qualify for existing benefits makes it harder for some businesses to justify that cost.

Fortunately, many cardholders using major wireless carriers and shipping companies won’t notice much of a difference. However, businesses relying on smaller wireless providers, third-party shipping platforms, or regional carriers could lose out on valuable rewards.

For example, a business spending $20,000 annually on shipping that no longer qualifies for 2X earning would miss out on 20,000 Membership Rewards points each year, assuming those purchases don’t qualify for another bonus category. That’s a meaningful number of points that could otherwise be transferred to airline or hotel partners for award travel.

Our recommendation:

  • Review your wireless and shipping expenses before February 17, 2027, particularly if you use the Business Platinum for recurring business purchases.
  • Check which merchant actually processes your payments, since using a qualifying carrier through an ineligible third-party platform may not earn the same rewards.
  • If your expenses will no longer qualify, consider moving that spending to another business credit card with more flexible bonus categories.

We wouldn’t recommend switching wireless providers solely to preserve a $10 monthly credit unless the numbers make sense. Ultimately, the Amex Business Platinum can still deliver substantial value through its travel benefits, statement credits, and transfer partners.
