Japan Airlines is one of the largest airlines headquartered in Japan. The airline’s frequent flyer program, JAL Mileage Bank, has become a favorite among points and miles enthusiasts across the globe due to the fact that it has resisted the switch to dynamic pricing models and continues to price its own award flights, as well as partner award flights, using a series of award charts. JAL Mileage Bank is also one of the best frequent flyer programs through which to book a round-the-world award ticket.
Unfortunately, the JAL Mileage Bank award charts for Japan Airlines-operated flights are complicated. First, it uses a rather complex award chart to price domestic Japan Airlines flights. Then, there’s a specific award chart for each major international route that Japan Airlines flies that dictates the prices of economy, premium-economy and business-class tickets. There’s also a separate award chart for each of these same routes that dictates the price of first-class award flights during low season, regular season and high season.
To make matters even more complicated, you can book economy, premium-economy and business-class award flights with base miles (which is just like purchasing an award flight through any other frequent flyer program). However, if certain economy, premium-economy and business-class award seats aren’t available with base miles, you may be able to book them with PLUS miles (which is like an additional mileage charge that allows you to book otherwise unavailable award flights).
So, while the JAL Mileage Bank program has plenty of advantages, simplicity is not one of them, especially when it comes to pricing Japan Airlines-operated flights. Luckily, the award charts for partner flights and Oneworld round-the-world awards are much simpler.
In this article, we’ll look at all of the different JAL Mileage Bank award charts. If you’re considering using the JAL Mileage Bank program to purchase your next award flight or upgrade, then this article will help you figure out how much that award will cost.
Base Miles vs. PLUS Miles
Understanding the award charts for Japan Airlines-operated flights can be a bit complicated. First, you can purchase Japan Airlines award flights either solely with base miles or a combination of base miles and PLUS miles. Purchasing flights solely with base miles requires fewer miles, but there’s much less availability for these awards. If a flight is unavailable for purchase with base miles, there’s a high chance you’ll be able to purchase it by using PLUS miles.
For instance, you can purchase an international one-way economy-class flight from New York to Tokyo for 27,000 base miles. However, if this flight is unavailable with base miles alone, you can choose to redeem 206,000 PLUS miles to purchase it.
Redeeming PLUS miles for flights is not a good way to get good value out of your miles. But if you’re desperate to get an award ticket and you’re willing to pay a huge premium, then it’s good to know that it’s an option. In our opinion, though, it’s almost always better to purchase a flight with cash than with PLUS miles.
JAL Mileage Bank publishes separate award charts for domestic and international Japan Airlines-operated flights. Then, for both domestic and international flights, there are award charts for both base miles and PLUS miles.

Japan Airlines International Flight Award Charts
While you can book Japan Airlines domestic first-class flights with PLUS miles, the same is not true for the airline’s international first-class flights. You can only book Japan Airlines international economy, premium economy and business class with PLUS miles. To make matters even more complicated, Japan Airlines first-class international flights are priced differently according to whether they occur during low, regular or high season.
In the next section, we’ll include the base miles and PLUS miles award charts for economy, premium-economy and business-class flights for each region. Then, we’ll look at the first-class award charts.

*For first-class award flights on American Airlines flights operated with two classes of service (economy class and first class), Hawaiian Airlines inter-island flights and Alaska Airlines flights, you’ll pay the business-class mileage rate instead of the first-class mileage rate.
**First-class awards are not available on flights operated by Air France, Emirates, Korean Air and Malaysia Airlines.
Fuel surcharges, taxes and fees vary depending on your route and the partner airline you’re flying with.
Partner flight awards for children and infants who occupy their own seat require the same mileage as those issued for adults. Infants who are sharing a seat with an adult cannot travel on an award ticket and must instead have a ticket purchased at the infant fare for the same cabin class as the accompanying adult.
The award chart above doesn’t apply to partner award flights operated by Jetstar Japan.
Jetstar Japan Award Chart
Partner award flights operated by Jetstar Japan are priced according to a separate zone-based award chart. The following table includes the routes in each zone:
| Zone A Domestic |

|
*Only Jetstar Japan domestic flights with the flight code GK are eligible to be booked as award flights.
The following chart includes the award rates for one-way Jetstar Japan-operated flights purchased through the JAL Mileage Bank program:

Oneworld Alliance Round-the-World Award Chart
You can also use JAL Mileage Bank miles to book round-the-world flight awards, which can include flights from several different Oneworld Alliance airlines (including Japan Airlines). Oneworld Alliance round-the-world flight awards are priced according to the total distance of all flights included in the itinerary.
To make things easy, Japan Airlines has a Distance Scheme Award Sector Mileage Calculator tool on its website. You can enter the origin and destination of every sector of your round-the-world itinerary into this tool and it’ll tell you the total mileage of your trip.
For instance, if your itinerary included one flight from Hong Kong to Tokyo and one flight from Tokyo to London, the total distance would be 8,037 miles.
You can then use the Oneworld Alliance round-the-world award chart below to discover how many miles you’d require to book your itinerary based on your total trip distance and desired class.

**First-class awards are not available on flights operated by Malaysia Airlines.
Travelers booking Oneworld Alliance round-the-world itineraries will also be required to pay taxes and fees and fuel surcharges related to each sector of the journey in cash.
It’s also worth noting that the distance of any surface sector is not included in the total trip distance.
Japan Airlines International Upgrade Award Chart
You can also redeem JAL Mileage Bank miles for cabin class upgrades on Japan Airlines-operated international flights. Unfortunately, you can’t redeem miles for upgrades on Japan Airlines domestic flights or partner flights.
To redeem miles for an upgrade, you need to have already booked a revenue ticket on that flight.
Below is the award chart for Japan Airlines international flight sectors going to or from Japan:
| Region | Cities | Economy to Premium Economy | Premium Economy to Business | Business to First |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| East Asia | Seoul | 9,000 | 12,000 | N/A |
| Beijing, Dalian, Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Tianjin, Taipei | 9,000 | 12,000 | 25,000 | |
| Guam | Guam | 9,000 | 12,000 | N/A |
| South East Asia/South Asia | Bangkok, Bengaluru, Delhi, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore | 15,000 | 20,000 | 35,000 |
| Manila | 9,000 | 12,000 | 25,000 | |
| Oceania | Melbourne, Sydney | 15,000 | 25,000 | 38,000 |
| Europe/Russia | Frankfurt | 20,000 | 33,000 | 48,000 |
| Helsinki, London, Paris | 20,000 | 33,000 | 48,000 | |
| Moscow | 15,000 | 25,000 | N/A | |
| Vladivostok | 9,000 | 12,000 | N/A | |
| Middle East | Doha | 15,000 | 30,000 | 45,000 |
| Hawaii | Honolulu/Kona | 15,000 | 25,000 | 30,000 |
| North America | Los Angeles (flights to/from Osaka, San Diego, Vancouver) | 20,000 | 30,000 | 45,000 |
| Boston, Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth, Los Angeles (flights to/from Tokyo, New York, San Francisco, Seattle) | 20,000 | 30,000 | 45,000 |
The prices listed in the award chart above are for upgrades to the next highest class of service. If you wanted to, for instance, upgrade from economy to business on a flight between Manila and Japan, you’d have to pay 9,000 miles to upgrade from economy to premium economy and then an additional 12,000 miles to upgrade from premium economy to business (for a total of 21,000 miles).
The Bottom Line
The JAL Mileage Bank program has many ways that you can redeem award miles. Unfortunately, understanding the pricing of Japan Airlines-operated flights can be fairly difficult, as there are two different types of redemptions (base miles and PLUS miles), and the program uses several complex awards.
However, if you’re looking to use your JAL Mileage Bank miles to book partner award flights, things are much simpler. This program allows you to use miles to book flights with any member of Oneworld Alliance as well as with several other non-Oneworld partner airlines, such as Air France, Bangkok Airways, Korean Air, Emirates and Hawaiian Airlines. All partner award flights are priced using a single distance-based award chart (with the lone exception of partner flights operated by Jetstar Japan, for which there’s another award chart).
The fact that Japan Airlines uses a single distance-based award chart to price almost all partner award flights makes this a great program for finding sweet spots that offer outsized value. Unfortunately, though, Japan Airlines isn’t a transfer partner of any of the major transferable credit card rewards programs, making JAL Mileage Bank miles difficult to earn.
Nonetheless, if you fly to or from Japan often on Japan Airlines, it’s a great idea to join the JAL Mileage Bank program and start taking advantage of award flights.
