The flag carrier of Australia, Qantas is the largest airline in the country by fleet size, number of international flights and number of international destinations. So, if you’re flying to or from Australia, there’s a solid chance that it’ll be on Qantas. Whether or not you’ve flown on Qantas before, you may be familiar with the Qantas Frequent Flyer program, as this program is a transfer partner of several major transferable credit card rewards programs, including American Express Membership Rewards, Capital One Rewards and Citi ThankYou Rewards.

If you have a credit card from any of the aforementioned programs, then you should definitely familiarize yourself with the Qantas Frequent Flyer program. This program is one of fewer and fewer frequent flyer programs that still prices some of its award flights using fixed award charts. And that means that it’s still possible to find outsized value redemptions (exceeding 1 cent per point) through Qantas Frequent Flyer.

The Qantas Frequent Flyer program has two kinds of flight awards: Classic Flight Rewards and Classic Plus Flight Rewards. Classic Flight Rewards (which are available for Qantas flights and partner flights) are priced using fixed award charts, whereas Classic Plus Flight Rewards (which are only available for Qantas flights) are priced using a dynamic pricing model. While Classic Plus Flight Rewards have greater availability than Classic Flight Rewards, if you want to maximize the value of your Qantas points, you should stick to redeeming them for Classic Flight Rewards.

Through Qantas Frequent Flyer, members can purchase flight awards on Qantas Classic Flight Rewards, Jetstar Classic Flight Rewards, Partner Classic Flight Rewards, Oneworld Classic Flight Rewards and Classic Upgrade Rewards, all of which are priced according to fixed, distance-based award charts. We’ll go over all of these award charts later in this article.

Frequent Flyer Award Chart for Qantas Classic Flight Rewards

The Qantas Frequent Flyer program uses one award chart for all Classic Flight Rewards. These Classic Flight Rewards include flights operated by Qantas, Fiji Airways, American Airlines and flights operated partially by one of the three aforementioned airlines along with a segment operated by Jetstar (JQ), Jetstar Asia (3K) or Jetstar Japan (GK).

If a flight award itinerary includes a segment operated by either Qantas, Fiji Airways or American Airlines as well as a segment operated by either Jetstar (JQ), Jetstar Asia (3K) or Jetstar Japan (GK), the Qantas Points required for that flight itinerary will be calculated as the lower of the following:

  • The rate stated in the Qantas Classic Flights Rewards award chart; or
  • The sum of points, pricing the segment of the trip that’s operated by Qantas, Fiji Airways or American Airlines according to the Qantas Classic Flight Rewards award chart and pricing the segment operated by Jetstar (JQ), Jetstar Asia (3K) or Jetstar Japan (GK) according to the Jetstar Classic Flight Reward award chart

If a flight award itinerary is operated entirely by Jetstar (JQ), Jetstar Asia (3K) or Jetstar Japan (GK), that flight award will be priced according to the Jetstar Classic Flight Reward award chart.

Below is the Qantas Classic Flight Rewards award chart:

Flight distance (in miles)EconomyPremium EconomyBusinessFirst

9,601–15,00055,200108,400144,600216,900

The award rates listed above are for one-way travel. So, if you wish to know the price of a round-trip Qantas Classic Flight Reward, you’ll need to price each direction separately.

For example, if you want to know the price of a Qantas-operated, round-trip economy flight from Sydney (SYD) to Adelaide (ADL), which would be about 725 miles in each direction, you would need to calculate the points required for each direction and then add them together. This award flight would cost you 24,000 points (12,000 x 2).

Frequent Flyer Award Chart for Jetstar Classic Flight Rewards

Qantas publishes a separate distance-based award chart for flight itineraries that are wholly operated by Jetstar (JQ), Jetstar Asia (3K) and/or Jetstar Japan (GK). For instance, this Jetstar Classic Flight Rewards award chart would be used to price an itinerary entirely operated by Jetstar Japan. It would also be used to price an itinerary in which one segment is operated by Jetstar Asia and another segment is operated by Jetstar Japan.

However, if there’s an itinerary in which a segment is operated by Qantas, Fiji Airways or American Airlines and another segment is operated by Jetstar (JQ), Jetstar Asia (3K) or Jetstar Japan (GK), then that flight will either be priced according to the Qantas Classic Flight Rewards award chart or, if the rate is lower, using both the Qantas Classic Flight Rewards award chart and the Jetstar Classic Flight Rewards award chart to price each segment separately.

Here’s the Jetstar Classic Flight Rewards award chart:

Flight distance (in miles)EconomyBusiness

8,401–9,60043,50094,900
9,601–15,00046,900108,400

The award chart above shows the rates for one-way travel. If you want to know the price of a round-trip award flight on Jetstar (JQ), Jetstar Asia (3K) or Jetstar Japan (GK), you’ll need to price each direction separately.

For example, if you want to know the round-trip price of a Jetstar-operated economy flight from Tokyo (NRT) to Seoul (ICN), which is about 783 miles in each direction, you would need to price each direction separately. So, this round-trip flight would cost you 19,200 points in total (9,600 x 2).

The rates listed above are for one-way travel. If you wish to know the price of a round-trip award flight on any of the partner airlines listed above, you’ll need to price each direction separately and then add them together.

For example, if you want to know the price of an Air France-operated round-trip economy award flight between New York City (JFK) and Paris (CDG), which is about 3,634 miles in each direction, you’d have to price each direction separately. The total cost of this award flight would be 60,400 points (30,200 x 2).

Frequent Flyer Award Chart for Oneworld Classic Flight Rewards

The Oneworld Classic Flight Rewards award chart is used to price itineraries that include travel on at least two Oneworld Alliance airlines other than Qantas and don’t include travel on any non-Oneworld airlines. Qantas flights operated by Jetstar (JQ), Jetstar Asia (3K) or Jetstar Japan (GK) cannot be included in Oneworld Classic Flight Rewards. Oneworld Classic Flight Rewards itineraries must begin and end in the same airport.

Oneworld Classic Flight Reward itineraries can include up to five free stopovers. Only one stopover is permitted in any one city in the itinerary. Only two transfers may be made in any one city in the itinerary. Oneworld Classic Flight Reward itineraries cannot have a total distance greater than 35,000 miles. Longer journeys must be broken into separate itineraries.

Here’s the distance-based award chart that applies to Oneworld Classic Flight Rewards:

To find the price of a Oneworld Classic Flight Rewards itinerary, you can add up the total mileage of every flight in the itinerary and then refer to the chart above.

If you book a Oneworld Classic Flight Reward that includes flights in multiple different cabin classes, you’ll be charged as if the entire itinerary were in the highest class of travel. For instance, if your Oneworld Classic Flight Reward includes two business-class flights and two economy-class flights, you will be charged the business-class rate for the entire itinerary.

Frequent Flyer Award Chart for Classic Upgrade Rewards

Through the Qantas Frequent Flyer program, you can also use points to purchase cabin class upgrades on Qantas-operated flights. In order to do so, you’ll have to submit a Classic Upgrade Reward request. These requests are prioritized based on your membership tier in the Qantas Frequent flyer program. The following table includes the timetable in which you can expect your request to be reviewed, based on your Qantas Frequent Flyer membership tier:

Membership tierDomestic upgradesInternational upgrades
Platinum OneWithin three days of scheduled departureWithin seven days of scheduled departure

Gold, Silver, BronzeWithin 24 hours of scheduled departureWithin 24 hours of scheduled departure

The price of a Classic Upgrade Reward depends on your original paid fare as well as the cabin class that you wish to upgrade to. So, the following award charts are divided by whether you’re flying domestic or international and which cabin class you’ll be upgrading to.

The Bottom Line

If you have a credit card from American Express, Capital One or Citi, it’s worth familiarizing yourself with the Qantas Frequent Flyer program. All three of these credit card programs allow 1:1 transfers to the Qantas Frequent Flyer program, making Qantas Points a fairly easy rewards currency to accumulate.

Plus, many Qantas-operated award flights, partner-operated award flights, Oneworld multi-carrier awards and some Qantas upgrade awards are priced based on fixed award charts. That means that, with some searching, you can find outsized value redemptions through this program that offer more than 1 cent per point in value.

And, to make this search easier, we’ve included all of the award charts from the Qantas Frequent Flyer program in this article.
