For U.S.-based travelers that want to fly across the Atlantic Ocean to Europe, TAP Air Portugal is a popular choice due to its relatively low fares. Plus, the airline’s headquarters are in the Portuguese capital city of Lisbon, which is a popular destination among U.S. vacationers, honeymooners and backpackers.
In addition to its low fares, TAP Air Portugal can help you save money on travel through its Miles&Go frequent flyer program. This program allows members to earn rewards miles in a variety of ways (including transferring miles from Capital One Rewards) and then spend those miles on award flights with TAP Air Portugal and its airline partners. There are many other ways to spend TAP Miles&Go miles, such as buying merchandise, but these typically provide less value than buying award flights.
One of the best things about the TAP Air Portugal Miles&Go program is that it still uses fixed award charts to price its own award flights as well as partner award flights. As opposed to programs that use dynamic pricing models that tie award prices to fluctuating cash prices, programs that use fixed award charts offer the opportunity to find outsized-value awards. In some cases, these awards can offer considerably more than 1 cent per point in value (which is better than the value you’ll get through programs that use dynamic pricing).
So, by familiarizing yourself with the Miles&Go program’s award charts and searching for award flights, you can potentially get great value out of your Miles&Go miles. In this article, we’re going to include all of the Miles&Go award charts so that you can easily reference them.

Miles&Go Awards for Flights on Non-Star Alliance Partners
TAP Air Portugal also has several partnerships with non-Star Alliance airlines. So, Miles&Go members can both earn and redeem miles with the following non-Star Alliance airlines:
- Azul
- Emirates
- GOL
- SATA Azores Airlines
It’s worth noting that, while you can use Mile&Go miles to book flights on these non-Star Alliance partners, TAP Air Portugal doesn’t have published award charts for these partner airlines. So, if you want to know the price of an award flight on Azul, Emirates, GOL or SATA Azores Airlines, you’ll need to log in to your Miles&Go account on the TAP Air Portugal website and manually search for award flights on these airlines.
Miles&Go Award Charts for Star Alliance Round-the-World Awards
Through the TAP Air Portugal Miles&Go program, you can use miles to book Star Alliance round-the-world awards in either economy class or business class. First-class Star Alliance round-the-world awards are not available through the Miles&Go program.
These awards can include flights on any Star Alliance airline and are valid for one year from the date of issue. There are several other rules that apply to round-the-world itineraries booked through Miles&Go:
- The trip must end in the country of origin.
- The flight can be in either the east or west direction, but all flights in the itinerary must be in the same direction.
- The itinerary must include a flight crossing the Atlantic Ocean and a flight crossing the Pacific Ocean.
- A maximum of six stopovers longer than 24 hours are allowed per itinerary.
- A maximum of 10 flights are allowed per itinerary.
- The ticket may not be canceled after the start of the journey.
- Once the ticket has been purchased, you can change the flight dates. However, you can’t change the route, cabin class or operating airline.
The following chart shows how many miles are required for Star Alliance round-the-world itineraries in economy class and business class:
Economy class | Business class |
---|---|
300,000 | 400,000 |
If your itinerary includes flights in different cabin classes, you’ll be charged the mileage rate for the higher cabin class for the entire itinerary. For instance, if your itinerary includes three flights in business class and four flights in economy class, you’ll be charged 400,000 (the same price as if the entire itinerary were in business class).
Miles&Go Award Charts for Upgrade Awards on TAP Air Portugal
In addition to redeeming miles for award flights on TAP Air Portugal, the Miles&Go program allows members to redeem miles for cabin class upgrades (from economy class to business class) on TAP Air Portugal flights. There are three different types of upgrade awards with different availabilities and mileage requirements:
- Early Upgrade: This is the most expensive type of upgrade. Early upgrades can be booked far in advance from the departure date of your flight and are almost always available. These upgrade awards can only be booked with miles by contacting the TAP Air Portugal Contact Center.
- Upgrade: Less expensive than Early Upgrades, regular upgrades can only be booked in the days just before your departure date and are subject to availability. These upgrade awards can be booked online through the TAP Air Portugal website or through the Contact Center.
- Last Minute Upgrade: These upgrades are the cheapest type of upgrade, but can only be booked at your boarding gate and are subject to availability. Last Minute Upgrades are only available to Miles&Go Silver and Gold elite status members.
All upgrade awards are priced according to a region-based award chart that uses the same regions as the award chart for TAP Air Portugal-operated flights. So, if you want to see which geographic areas are included in which regions, you can refer to the “Miles&Go Award Charts for Flights on TAP Air Portugal” section above.
Here’s the award chart for upgrade awards available on TAP Air Portugal-operated flights:
Flights to/from Mainland Portugal | Early Upgrade | Upgrade | Last Minute Upgrade |
---|---|---|---|
Western Africa | 42,900 | 39,000 | 31,900 |
Austral Africa | 119,900 | 89,900 | 69,900 |
Central America | 71,900 | 54,900 | 35,900 |
North America | 81,600 | 68,000 | 57,900 |
South America | 81,600 | 68,000 | 57,900 |
Spain, North Africa | 14,900 | 13,000 | 12,000 |
Europe 1 | 18,000 | 15,000 | 14,000 |
Europe 2 | 22,800 | 18,000 | 16,900 |
Madeira, Azores | 14,400 | 12,900 | 11,900 |
Middle East | 55,900 | 39,900 | 32,200 |
Mainland Portugal | 11,900 | 8,900 | 6,900 |
Each upgrade award is valid for one sector only. If you have a TAP Air Portugal flight with a stopover booked and you want to upgrade your entire itinerary, you’ll need to purchase two upgrade awards for that itinerary.
For example, if you wanted to upgrade an entire one-way itinerary from Tel Aviv (Middle East) to Rio de Janeiro (South America) with a stopover in Lisbon (Mainland Portugal), you’d have to purchase a Middle East-Mainland Portugal upgrade as well as a Mainland Portugal-South America upgrade. If you were to book both of these as Early Upgrades, it would cost you 137,500 miles (55,900 + 81,600). If you were to book them as an Upgrade, it would cost 107,900 miles (39,900 + 68,000). And, if you were to book them as a Last Minute Upgrade, it would cost 90,100 miles (32,200 + 57,900).
Upgrade awards are also available on the direct flight operated by TAP Air Portugal between Boston and Ponta Delgada for 81,600 miles as an Early Upgrade, 68,000 miles as an Upgrade and 57,900 miles as a Last Minute Upgrade.
Miles&Go Award Charts for Upgrade Awards on TAP Air Portugal
In addition to booking cabin class upgrades with miles on TAP Air Portugal-operated flights, you can use Miles&Go miles to purchase cabin class upgrades on Star Alliance partner-operated flights. You can upgrade from economy to business, from business to first and even from economy directly to first on certain eligible flights. The following table includes which flights on which airlines are eligible for each kind of upgrade award as well as the booking window for upgrade awards on each airline:

*Upgrades from economy to first class are only available on flights with two classes of service (economy and first).
Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) doesn’t allow Star Alliance upgrade awards to be used on domestic or European flights.
Star Alliance upgrade awards cannot be combined with other awards, meaning that you can’t use upgrade awards for Star Alliance award flights. When using an upgrade award, you’ll earn miles for your flight based on your original cabin class.
Economy to Business/Economy to First
The following award chart includes the required miles for Star Alliance upgrade awards from economy to business class or, on flights that only offer two classes of service, economy to first class (all values are expressed in thousands of miles):
Central and South America | Central, West and East Africa | Asia | North America | Europe and North Africa | Middle East | Oceania | Southern Africa | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Central and South America | 15 | 50 | 50 | 45 | 35 | 50 | 50 | 50 |
Central, West and East Africa | 50 | 15 | 50 | 35 | 25 | 50 | 50 | 45 |
Asia | 50 | 50 | 15 | 50 | 60 | 45 | 40 | 50 |
North America | 45 | 35 | 50 | 15 | 35 | 50 | 50 | 60 |
Europe and North Africa | 35 | 25 | 60 | 35 | 15 | 40 | 70 | 55 |
Middle East | 50 | 50 | 45 | 50 | 40 | 15 | 50 | 50 |
Oceania | 50 | 50 | 40 | 50 | 70 | 50 | 15 | 50 |
Southern Africa | 50 | 45 | 50 | 60 | 55 | 50 | 50 | 15 |
Each upgrade award is only valid for one segment. So, if you have a Star Alliance flight with multiple segments booked and you want to upgrade your entire flight, then you’ll need to pay for two upgrade awards. For instance, if you have a flight from London (Europe and North Africa region) to Tokyo (Asia region) with a stopover in Dubai (Middle East region), then you’ll need to pay for a Europe and North Africa-Middle East upgrade award (40,000 miles) as well as a Middle East-Asia upgrade award (45,000 miles). Thus, upgrading this entire itinerary from economy to business class would cost you 85,000 miles (40,000 + 45,000).
Business to First Class
The following award chart includes the mileage rates for Star Alliance upgrade awards from business class to first class (all values are expressed in thousands of miles):
Central and South America | Central, West and East Africa | Asia | North America | Europe and North Africa | Middle East | Oceania | Southern Africa | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Central and South America | 25 | 70 | 75 | 80 | 50 | 75 | 75 | 90 |
Central, West and East Africa | 70 | 25 | 75 | 50 | 35 | 75 | 75 | 85 |
Asia | 75 | 75 | 25 | 75 | 90 | 70 | 60 | 75 |
North America | 80 | 50 | 75 | 25 | 50 | 75 | 75 | 85 |
Europe and North Africa | 50 | 35 | 90 | 50 | 25 | 60 | 100 | 80 |
Middle East | 75 | 75 | 70 | 75 | 60 | 25 | 75 | 75 |
Oceania | 75 | 75 | 60 | 75 | 100 | 75 | 25 | 75 |
Southern Africa | 90 | 85 | 75 | 85 | 80 | 75 | 75 | 25 |
Each of the rates listed above is for an upgrade award eligible for one segment. If you’ve booked a multi-segment Star Alliance flight, then you’ll need to buy multiple upgrade awards if you wish to upgrade your entire itinerary. For instance, if you were to book a round-trip nonstop flight between Jakarta, Indonesia (Asia region) and Sydney, Australia (Oceania region), that itinerary would consist of two segments and would require two upgrade awards to upgrade the entire itinerary. Thus, upgrading this whole itinerary from business to first class would require 120,000 miles (60,000 x 2).
The Bottom Line
Because TAP Air Portugal is a member of Star Alliance and also a transfer partner of Capital One Rewards (as well as Marriott Bonvoy), the Miles&Go program can be a very lucrative program for many U.S.-base travelers.
And, because the Miles&Go program still uses fixed region-based award charts to price its own reward flights as well as partner-operated award flights, members can find outsized-value redemptions that offer more than 1 cent per mile with a little searching.
Another great use of Miles&Go miles is to book Star Alliance round-the-world awards through the TAP Air Portugal Miles&Go program in economy class and business class. However, these round-the-world awards are available for fewer points through other Star Alliance frequent flyer programs, such as ANA Mileage Club.
