I know it might not be the best value for my points, but I’m going to make a bold choice and admit that I’m transferring to Hyatt to book one of the new Under Canvas properties that are available through Hyatt’s new Mr. and Mrs. Smith partnership. The award chart for these properties is not as favorable as Hyatt’s other brands in the portfolio, but I think it’s so cool and unique to be able to use points to glamp in/near National Parks. Outdoor adventures have not typically been that easy to book with points, often finding yourself at a Holiday Inn Express 1.5 hours from the entrance to the National Park you’re interested in exploring. I’m stoked about this and am a big believer in using your points for what makes you happy, not always what gets you the best value. If you haven’t heard about this partnership, you can learn more about the properties available on the Under Canvas website.
My pick is the Under Canvas West Yellowstone property. It’s just outside the west entrance of the National Park and I can stay for 3 nights with each night coming in around 28,250 Hyatt points per night for a trip next July.

I don’t have points left for the flights, but I love road trips. They are one of my favorite ways to travel the country, so I don’t mind the drive. Plus, it means I can bring more gear to explore the park with and not have to worry about fitting it all in my carry-on and personal item.

One of the best ways to use Ultimate Rewards points is to transfer them to Hyatt. Because my husband and I love going to Europe, I’d transfer 90,000 Ultimate Rewards points to Hyatt for a trip to Austria and Germany’s Christmas markets and book these two properties.
Andaz Vienna Am Belvedere, Vienna, Austria
Vienna is one of my favorite places in the world. I’ve been to Vienna many times, including once a couple of years ago in late November, when it was all resplendent in its glittering Christmas finery. Vienna is never a bad idea, but it sparkles, pun intended, during Christmas time.
While Andaz isn’t super central, as a category 3, you can book it with just 9,000 to 15,000 points per night. With cash rates routinely hovering above $200, this represents a great value. It’s a beautiful, modern hotel with spacious rooms just steps away from the central train station (perfect for day trips outside of the city) and a few minutes walk to a tram that takes you to the center city in about 10 minutes.

I’ve stayed there twice and I wouldn’t hesitate to come back.
Brunfels Hotel, Mainz, Germany
Another property I am interested in is the brand new Brunfels Hotel in Mainz. It’s also a category 3 property, so you can really stretch your Ultimate Rewards points. And because it’s a brand new property, Hyatt will give you 500 points for trying it out before November 30, 2024. Lots of Christmas markets open in the second half of November, so I’d consider this a great time to visit Germany before it gets too cold.

Germany has great rail connections, so you could fly into Frankfurt, one of Germany’s largest airports, then catch a train to Mainz and easily explore several nearby cities and towns with their own Christmas markets.
Europe is simply magical at Christmas time, and everyone should get to experience it at least once. With these affordable Hyatt options and plenty of opportunities to book travel between the U.S. and Germany with points and miles, it’s easy to make this amazing trip a reality.

I’m only about a year into points and miles, and this is my first contribution to one of our articles like this, so I’m going somewhere I’ve been a handful of times already: San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Cash flights from my home airport of Tampa are usually pretty inexpensive on discount airlines, and that’s what I’ve used to get to and from the island every time I’ve visited. But for the sake of this article, I’m going with a different scenario. Let’s pretend I have the Southwest Companion Pass (I’m going after it this year, so hopefully I’ll have it next year!). Chase Ultimate Rewards points transfer 1:1 to Southwest Airlines, so we’re going to search for flights on Southwest from TPA to SJU.
I checked January 2025 from TPA to SJU and the lowest rate I found was 9,296 points per person. Again, assuming I have the Southwest Companion Pass, that will actually get me and my partner to the island for the price of one.

The way back was the same rate of 9,296 points per person. So our dates are January 7-10th for a total of 18,592 points for one person (and my companion tags along for free).

Now where should we stay? Admittedly, I’ve never stayed in a hotel in Puerto Rico, I’ve always stayed with my partner’s family. Although I can’t give you my first-hand hotel recommendations, there are a few different Hyatt properties that look nice in San Juan.
One of them is a Hyatt Place close to Old San Juan which goes for about 12,000 points per night on average. That one would be a great choice if you want to stay closer to Old San Juan. This part of town features brick-lined streets with restaurants, shops and old forts – it’s very lively, walkable and a lot of fun. Be sure to stop at the street carts for some piragua, a shaved ice treat with tamarind fruit syrup, or visit my favorite dive bar in the area, El Batey.
Since I haven’t stayed in a hotel there before, I’d personally opt for a bit more luxury a little farther away from Old San Juan, the Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve. The pool here looks fantastic! You can find rates of around 17,000 points per night during off-peak season, but for the dates I chose for this scenario, the rates were 20,000 points per night for a total of 60,000 points for our three-night stay.

So with the flights and hotel stay, we’re looking at 78,592 points, which means you’d even have enough for a night at a lower award category hotel, perhaps one closer to Old San Juan like the Hyatt Place location. Or you can put those points towards your next redemption!
Final Thoughts
Whether you’re looking to get away from the cold and dip into a tropical ocean, would prefer to set your sights on a magical Christmas setting or would rather lay beneath the stars in the wild West, 90,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points can help get you there.
