British airline Virgin Atlantic operates several routes between major U.S. cities and Europe. So, many U.S.-based travelers may have flown on Virgin Atlantic before or are at least familiar with the airline. Virgin Atlantic has its own frequent flyer program, called Flying Club, which is a favorite among points/miles enthusiasts.
One of the reasons Virgin Atlantic Flying Club is such a popular program is that it’s a transfer partner of every major credit card rewards program, including American Express Membership Rewards, Bilt Rewards, Capital One Rewards, Chase Ultimate Rewards and Citi ThankYou Rewards. So, if you have a credit card that earns transferable points, you should be able to transfer them at a 1:1 ratio to the Virgin Atlantic Flying Club program.
Another reason this is such a popular program is that it still uses a region-based award chart to price its own award flights as well as partner award charts (and some seats on its own award flights). Compared to programs that use dynamic pricing models (and, thus, offer about 1 cent per mile for every redemption), programs that use fixed award charts offer the opportunity to find outsized-value redemptions that can provide considerably more than 1 cent per point in value in some cases.
On Oct. 30, 2024, the Flying Club program made some major changes to the pricing and availability of award seats on Virgin-operated flights. Now, all seats on Virgin Atlantic flights will be available to book with points.
Virgin Atlantic used to guarantee at least 12 available seats on each of its flights at Saver award levels (meaning that they’re priced according to a fixed award chart). However, the airline has eliminated this guarantee from its program. So, although there’s now more award seat availability, many flights will offer only dynamically priced award seats, which tends to offer far less value per point.
Having said that, Saver award seats will still be available on some flights. In fact, Saver award rates on many Virgin Atlantic routes have been lowered. So, although it may be harder to find Saver award availability now, if you’re able to, then you can still get great value per point on Virgin Atlantic-operated award flights.
So, if you have a credit card that earns transferable rewards or you often fly with Virgin Atlantic or one of its SkyTeam Alliance partners, it’s worth familiarizing yourself with Virgin Atlantic’s award charts so you can identify sweet spots in the Virgin Atlantic Flying Club program and get the maximum value out of your points.

Flying Club Award Charts for Flights on Virgin Atlantic
As mentioned above, some Virgin Atlantic-operated award flights purchased through the Flying Club program are priced according to region-based award charts whereas others are priced according to a dynamic pricing model.
In general, if you want to maximize the value of your Virgin points, you should stick to redeeming for Saver awards. The best way to find Saver award space is to use the Rewards Seat Checker tool from the Virgin Atlantic website and look for awards with a red tag icon next to them indicating Saver award space.
As previously mentioned, the redemption rates of Saver awards depend on the route you’re flying. However, the prices of Virgin Atlantic-operated award flights also vary based on whether they occur during standard or peak season.
Peak season dates are different for flights on Caribbean and Indian Ocean routes. The following table includes which dates are considered peak season through March 2026:
All other routes | Caribbean and Indian Ocean routes |

- 1,000 points in Economy
- 2,000 points in Premium
- 5,000 points in Upper Class
Additionally, the Virgin Atlantic Flying Club program has a Companion Seat feature that offers a 50% mileage discount on Premium seats if you’ve already purchased a Premium ticket with cash on the same flight or a 50% mileage discount on Upper Class seats if you’ve already purchased an Upper Class ticket with cash on the same flight.

Air France and KLM
The prices of award flights operated by Air France and KLM through Flying Club vary based on whether they occur during peak or off-peak dates. However, Virgin Atlantic doesn’t publish which dates are considered peak or off-peak for Air France or KLM flights, which makes it difficult to predict exactly what award rates for certain dates will be.
The reason that Air France and KLM have been grouped into one section is that the Virgin Atlantic Flying Club program prices short-haul flights from both airlines using the same distance-based award chart and long-haul award flights operated by both of these partner airlines using the same zone-based award charts.
Air France and KLM Short-Haul Flights
Air France and KLM short-haul flights are priced according to a distance-based award chart. Here’s the award chart for short-haul Air France and KLM award flights during off-peak season:
Flight distance (miles) | Economy (Peak) | Economy (Off-peak) | Business (Peak) | Business (Off-peak) |

Flying Club Award Charts for Upgrades on Virgin Atlantic
The Flying Club program also gives members the option to redeem points for cabin class upgrades whether you booked your original flight with cash or with Virgin points.
If you booked your original flight entirely with Virgin points, then the cost of your upgrade will be calculated using the following formula:
- The rate in points of your new upgraded seat – the rate in points that you paid for your original booking = the cost of your upgrade award
You may also have to pay any difference in taxes and fees between your original booking and the upgraded booking.
For example, if you made an economy booking for 40,000 points and $20 in taxes and fees and you want to upgrade to business class, which has a rate of 70,000 points and $50 in taxes and fees, you’d have to redeem an additional 30,000 points (70,000 – 40,000 = 30,000) and pay $30 in taxes and fees ($50 – $20 = $30).
If you booked your original flight either entirely with cash or using the Points Plus Money feature, then the price of your upgrade will be calculated using the following formula:
- The rate in points of your new upgraded seat – the maximum Saver rate for the cabin you’re upgrading from = the cost of your upgrade award
You may also have to pay any difference in taxes and fees between your original booking and the upgraded booking. The carrier surcharge that you’ll pay for the upgraded booking will also include deduction of the carrier surcharge at the maximum Saver rate for the cabin you’re upgrading from.
Only flights that are entirely operated by Virgin Atlantic are eligible for upgrade awards. Flights that include sectors operated by other airlines are not eligible for upgrade awards.
The Bottom Line
The Virgin Atlantic Flying Club program has long been a favorite among savvy travelers. This frequent flyer program is a transfer partner of every major transferable credit card rewards program, including American Express Membership Rewards, Bilt Rewards, Capital One Rewards, Chase Ultimate Rewards and Citi ThankYou Rewards. Virgin Atlantic is also a member of SkyTeam Alliance. So, it’s easy to rack up Flying Club points through credit card transfers or by flying with Virgin Atlantic or one of its airline partners.
When it comes to redeeming Virgin Atlantic Flying Club points, it’s possible to get a lot of value due to the fact that this program still uses distance-based and region-based award charts to price its own award flights as well as partner award flights.
Unfortunately, the program recently switched over to pricing many more of its own award flights using a dynamic model. Nevertheless, you can still find some (although fewer) Virgin Atlantic-operated award flights at Saver levels, which are now lower than ever on many routes. So, while Saver seats on Virgin Atlantic flights are now harder to find, they can still provide great value if you’re willing to do some searching.
So, if you’re willing to do some searching, you can find redemptions through the Virgin Atlantic Flying Club program that offer value exceeding 1 cent per point. And, to make your search easier, you can refer to the award charts listed above.
