Atmos Rewards is the frequent flyer program for Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines. Since the program was only fully rolled out in 2025, many travelers may not be familiar with its benefits and features. However, Atmos Rewards has quickly cemented itself as one of the best frequent flyer programs in the industry.
This program includes the unique option to choose how you earn points on flights (by airfare, by distance or by segment), an option not offered by any other frequent flyer program. Atmos Rewards elite status is fairly easy to obtain and includes some excellent perks. Unfortunately, the program’s main drawback is its lack of credit card transfer partners, an issue that will hopefully be fixed in coming years.
The Atmos Rewards Merger
Alaska Airlines acquired Hawaiian Airlines in September 2024 and immediately began merging the two airlines’ frequent flyer programs in stages. The two airlines (which still operate as separate brands) now use a single joint frequent flyer program known as Atmos Rewards.
Legacy Program Structures Before the Merger
Before the Alaska-Hawaiian merger, both airlines operated their own independent frequent flyer programs (known as Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan and Hawaiian Airlines HawaiianMiles). After the acquisition, members of both programs were given the ability to transfer points freely between Mileage Plan and HawaiianMiles.
In August 2025, the Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan was replaced by the Atmos Rewards program. At this point, Hawaiian Airlines HawaiianMiles was still active and operating as a separate program. It wasn’t until October 2025 that both Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines discontinued their legacy programs and fully adopted the Atmos Rewards program.
Transition Timeline and Account Migration
The transition between these legacy programs to the new Atmos Rewards program was very smooth for both Mileage Plan and HawaiianMiles members. All rewards miles and elite-qualifying miles from both legacy programs were transferred to Atmos Rewards at a 1:1 ratio with no action required from members. If travelers had accounts with both legacy programs, all of their miles were pooled in the Atmos Rewards program. Mileage Plan members were able to keep their existing account numbers when shifting to Atmos Rewards, while HawaiianMiles-only members were assigned new Atmos Rewards account numbers.
One negative result of the merger, though, is that you can’t transfer American Express Membership Rewards to the Atmos Rewards program. Previously, Amex points could be transferred to the HawaiianMiles program and either used through HawaiianMiles or subsequently transferred to Mileage Plan at a 1:1 ratio. This option is no longer available.
How the Atmos Program Works Today
Atmos Rewards members can also earn base points, bonus points and status points by taking paid flights with both Oneworld and non-Oneworld partner airlines. Likewise, Atmos Rewards points can also be redeemed for flights with certain partner airlines. Here are all of the airlines with which you can earn and redeem Atmos Rewards points (certain airlines only allow you to earn Atmos Rewards points and are denoted as such):

Earning Atmos Points on Flights
Currently, on paid flights with Alaska Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines and eligible partner airlines, Atmos Rewards members can earn both base points and bonus points based on the operating airline, where they purchased their flight and the fare class they’re flying in. However, later in 2026, Atmos Rewards will become the first-ever frequent flyer program to give members the option of how they want to earn points. Once per year, you’ll be able to choose whether to earn based on distance flown, segments flown or airfare.

If you take primarily medium-haul flights, the best of these three options will typically be to earn by price paid. However, if you tend to take low-priced long-haul flights, then your best option may be to earn by distance flown. Generally, the worst of the three options is to earn by segment.
Qualifying for Elite Status Tiers
In addition to earning Atmos Rewards points through qualifying activities, you can also earn status points with the Atmos Rewards program and its partners. Status points allow Atmos Rewards members to qualify for elite status and earn milestone rewards.
The most obvious way to earn status points with Atmos Rewards is by taking flights with Alaska Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines or a partner airline. Status points are earned on flights as a percentage of miles flown, depending on the fare class. The following table explains how many status points you’ll earn on eligible flights in each of the Alaska fare classes:

You’ll earn 1 status point per 20 points redeemed for flights if you choose to earn by airfare, 500 status points per segment if you choose to earn by segment and 1 status point per mile flown if you choose to earn by distance flown.

There are many ways that you can redeem Atmos Rewards points, including award flights, hotel stays, rental cars and experiences. If you want to maximize the value of your Atmos Rewards points, it’s best to stick to award flight redemptions.
The Atmos Reward program publishes award charts for flights on Alaska Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines and partner airlines. However, these award charts display the minimum rates for award flights on each route. Real-world rates may be higher than those displayed in these award charts.

Transfer Partners and External Earning Options
Currently, the only credit card rewards program that allows transfers to the Atmos Rewards program is Bilt Rewards, at a 1:1 ratio. Bilt currently offers three personal credit cards: the Bilt Blue Card ($0 annual fee, rates and fees), the Bilt Obsidian Card ($95 annual fee, rates and fees) and the Bilt Palladium Card ($495 annual fee, rates and fees).
You can also earn Bilt Points for rent payments by signing up for an account, linking your address and paying your rent through Bilt’s app or website.
The Marriott Bonvoy program also allows you to transfer points to Atmos Rewards at a 3:1 ratio (plus a bonus of 5,000 Atmos Rewards points for every 60,000 Bonvoy points you transfer). Unfortunately, even with this transfer bonus, this transfer ratio provides very low value. Typically, you’re much better off redeeming your Marriott Bonvoy points through its native program.
Comparing Atmos to Competing Loyalty Programs
Since its introduction, Atmos Rewards has quickly become one of the best frequent flyer programs in the world. The option to choose how you earn points (by airfare, by distance or by segment) is very valuable. By comparison, all other frequent flyer programs predetermine how members earn rewards points on flights, and most airlines are switching over to a revenue-based model for awarding points on flights.
Earning elite perks with the Atmos Rewards program is fairly easy compared to other frequent flyer programs, with perks starting when you earn just 10,000 status points annually and Atmos Silver status earned with just 20,000 annual status points. Plus, Atmos Rewards elite status includes valuable perks such as complimentary upgrades, airport lounge access and free checked bags. By comparison, American Airlines AAdvantage members don’t receive any perks until they earn 15,000 Loyalty Points and don’t earn status until 40,000 Loyalty Points.
The Atmos Rewards program does publish award charts. However, these charts contain the floor rates for award flights on each route, and real-world rates may be higher. So, while this system is preferable to frequent flyer programs that use dynamic pricing (such as Delta SkyMiles), it offers less opportunity for value than programs that use truly fixed award charts (such as ANA Mileage Club).
Finally, the main drawback of the Atmos Rewards program is its lack of credit card transfer partners. Currently, the only credit card rewards program that allows transfers to Atmos Rewards is Bilt Rewards. By comparison, earning points with a program such as Air France-KLM Flying Blue is much easier for most consumers because Flying Blue is a 1:1 transfer partner of nearly every major credit card rewards program in the United States (U.S.).
Strategic Sweet Spots for Maximum Value
You’ll typically get the most value for your Atmos Rewards points when redeeming for award flights. Not all award flight redemptions offer the same value per point. Here are some of the award flight types that consistently offer the best value per point through the Atmos Rewards program and some examples of each award type:
- Business-class flights between the U.S. and Europe
- Aer Lingus-operated flights between New York and Dublin from 45,000 miles
- Iberia-operated flights between Boston and Madrid from 45,000 miles
- American Airlines-operated or British Airways-operated flights between New York and London from 45,000 miles
- Flights from the contiguous U.S. to Hawaii on Alaska Airlines
- Economy flights between Boston and Honolulu from 20,000 miles
- Business flights between San Francisco and Honolulu from 30,000 miles
Other Alaska Airlines sweet spots may include flights to Mexico and flights within the contiguous U.S. By keeping these sweet spots in mind, you can maximize the value of your Atmos Rewards points. It can also be helpful to use third-party search tools such as AwardTool or Seats.Aero to find availability on these routes.
Navigating the New Normal for Alaska and Hawaiian Flyers
The Alaska-Hawaiian merger has resulted in mostly positive changes for travelers. The Atmos Rewards program is more flexible and valuable than either airline’s legacy program, with the option to choose how you earn miles on flights and milestone rewards that offer benefits between elite status tiers.
For those who were members of either the Alaska Mileage Plan or HawaiianMiles programs, the transition to the Atmos Rewards program should have been effortless and the program’s perks are a welcome change.
