The Delta SkyMiles program remains one of the most comprehensive airline loyalty programs in the United States, rewarding frequent flyers with a variety of valuable travel perks.

From elite Medallion status tiers to a diverse range of co-branded American Express Delta cards, SkyMiles members can rack up thousands of SkyMiles while flying and spending their way to elite status.

With SkyMiles that never expire, a wide partner network across airlines, hotels and rental car agencies, and the ability to earn through everyday purchases, Delta’s program offers consistent value for both casual travelers and frequent flyers. However, knowing how to use Delta SkyMiles strategically is key to maximizing their value.

This guide provides a Delta SkyMiles program overview, breaking down how to earn, qualify and redeem SkyMiles effectively, maximize elite status benefits and take full advantage of lounge access, upgrades and cardholder perks.

Delta SkyMiles Program Fundamentals

The Delta SkyMiles program is free to enroll in and allows you to earn points toward status—Medallion Qualification Dollars (MQDs)—as well as points you can redeem for award flights—Delta SkyMiles.

Here’s a breakdown of how to climb the status ladder and the benefits you can expect at each level.

SkyMiles Membership Levels

The Delta SkyMiles program offers four levels of elite Medallion status: Silver, Gold, Platinum and Diamond. Medallion status is earned through accumulating Medallion Qualification Dollars (MQDs).

As you can see, it pays to climb the status ladder.

Delta also rewards its most loyal customers based on the total number of miles you’ve flown. Once you fly a total of 1 million miles with Delta and its partners, you’ll receive Million Miler status, unlocking complimentary annual Medallion status, personalised bag tags and a number of other elite perks.

The more total miles you fly, the higher your level of annual complimentary Medallion status will be. Here’s the Medallion status you’ll be entitled to at each Million Miler tier:

  • 1 Million – Gold Medallion
  • 2 Million – Platinum Medallion
  • 3 to 4 Million – Diamond Medallion
  • 5+ Million – Invitation to Delta 360°

Keep in mind that the number of MQDs you earn each year as a Million Miler doesn’t affect your level of complimentary Medallion status.

Medallion Qualification Metrics

You can earn Medallion status by accruing a certain number of MQDs, which you can earn by spending money on flights with Delta and its partner airlines, spending money on co-branded Delta credit cards and making bookings through Delta Stays and Delta Vacations.

Here’s how many MQDs you’ll earn with each of these methods:

  • 1X MQD per $1 spent on the ticket price of Delta-marketed flights operated by Delta or one of its partner airlines (excluding taxes, fees and basic economy fares)
  • 1X MQD per $1 spent on vacation bookings through Delta Vacations
  • 1X MQD per $10 spent on the Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card or the Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Business American Express Card
  • 1X MQD per $20 spent on the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card or the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Business American Express Card

You also can earn MQDs on car rentals made during limited-time promotional periods through Delta Cars and Stays.

Similarly, holders of the Delta SkyMiles Platinum or the Delta SkyMiles Reserve cards receive an annual boost of 2,500 MQDs each qualification year.

To achieve a given level of Medallion status, you need to earn the required number of MQDs within a Medallion Qualification Year, which runs from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31. Keep in mind that MQDs don’t rollover to the following year—instead, your earnings will reset to zero.

Earning Delta SkyMiles

Let’s now look at how to earn Delta SkyMiles so that you can start flying for (almost) free.

Flying with Delta and Partners

When you book a flight through Delta, you’ll earn SkyMiles on the base fare and the carrier-imposed surcharges (government-imposed taxes and fees are excluded from mileage earnings).

It’s free to sign up for the Delta SkyMiles program and since miles don’t expire, there’s no reason not to enroll in the program and start earning rewards on your flights.

If you have elite status with Delta, you’ll be able to rack up SkyMiles significantly faster than those without status. Here are the earnings rates for each status tier:

  • General member – 5X miles per dollar
  • Silver Medallion – 7X miles per dollar
  • Gold Medallion – 8X miles per dollar
  • Platinum Medallion – 9X miles per dollar
  • Diamond Medallion – 11X miles per dollar

For instance, if you book a flight that costs $300 (excluding taxes), you’ll earn 1,500 SkyMiles as a general program member. If you have status, you’ll earn 2,100 SkyMiles on the same flight as a Silver Medallion member and 3,300 SkyMiles as a Diamond Medallion member. If you frequently book flights with Delta, the difference in earnings becomes significant.

Keep in mind that the person who flies is the one who earns miles. So even if you book a flight for your significant other, miles will be credited to their SkyMiles account.

Basic economy tickets don’t earn miles regardless of elite status.

Another way to earn SkyMiles through flying is to book flights with Delta’s partner airlines. You can book partner flights either through Delta’s website or through partner airlines’ websites.

When you book partner-operated flights through Delta’s website, you’ll earn miles on the base fare and carrier-imposed surcharges—just like with Delta-operated flights.

When you book partner-operated flights through a partner airline’s website, you’ll need to add your Delta SkyMiles account number at checkout. You’ll then earn SkyMiles in accordance with each partners’ rules, which are based on the distance flown, booking class and whether you have Delta SkyMiles elite status.

Credit Card Earning Opportunities

Aside from booking flights with Delta and its partner airlines, the best way to earn SkyMiles is by signing up for one or more of Delta’s co-branded credit cards. Annual fees for these cards vary from $0 to $650, so there’s a card for everyone regardless of how often you fly with Delta.

American Express is the sole issuer of Delta cards, and there are four consumer cards and three business cards that allow you to earn SkyMiles. Here’s a breakdown of all the cards.

Maximizing SkyMiles Value

Let’s now look at how to use Delta SkyMiles for maximum value.

Award Pricing and Availability

Since Delta SkyMiles was the first major frequent-flyer program to switch to a dynamic pricing model, you won’t find a Delta award travel chart. The program has experienced a number of changes and devaluations over the years that makes it tricky to get outsized value for your SkyMiles.

However, considering how easy it is to rack up thousands of SkyMiles, it remains a useful program for frequent travelers.

Best Value Redemption Options

Delta occasionally offers limited-time sales on certain routes, offering competitive award prices. These flash sales are usually on short- and long-haul flights to domestic destinations as well as cities across Europe, Asia and the Caribbean.

Aside from flash sales, one of the best uses of Delta SkyMiles is for domestic flights within the United States.

For instance, you can often find coast-to-coast flights for fewer than 10,000 SkyMiles per direction, such as the below example from Seattle (SEA) to Newark, New Jersey (EWR), for 8,900 miles.

You also can find ultra-short-haul flights within the U.S. for fewer than 5,000 SkyMiles each way, such as Boston (BOS) to New York (JFK) for 4,800 miles.

While these redemptions typically offer only a little over 1 cent per point in value, they save you from paying cash for short domestic trips.

Another solid use of Delta SkyMiles is for trips across the Atlantic to Europe in economy. For example, you could fly from New York to London-Heathrow (LHR) for 29,000 SkyMiles each way.

Delta SkyMiles can also come in handy for booking award travel within South America, thanks to its partnership with LATAM.

For instance, you could fly from Santiago, Chile (SCL), to Lima, Peru (LIM), for 15,900 miles in Economy Plus.

You also could fly from Sao Paulo (GRU) to Mexico City (MEX) for 35,000 miles per direction in Economy Plus.

If you’re hoping to use your SkyMiles for business-class award redemptions, your best bet is to redeem them for partner flights within and between Europe and Asia.

For example, you could fly with Saudia from Amsterdam (AMS) to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (KUL), for 80,000 miles in business each way.

You also could fly from Paris (CDG) to Jakarta, Indonesia (CGK), with Vietnam Airlines in business class at the same rates.

Overall, SkyMiles can come in handy for the frequent traveler, be it for luxury business awards in Europe and Asia or low-cost economy awards in the U.S. and South America.

Elite Status Benefits

All Medallion members enjoy priority check-in and boarding, cutting airport wait times significantly.

Gold Medallion members or higher will enjoy complimentary SkyTeam Elite Plus status.

The highest-value perks appear at the Platinum and Diamond levels, where members earn Choice Benefits—custom rewards that can be tailored to personal travel style. Options include bonus SkyMiles, Delta Sky Club memberships, travel vouchers and Regional and Global Upgrade Certificates for confirmed cabin upgrades.

You can optimize these rewards by selecting benefits that align with trip frequency and your cabin preference—frequent domestic flyers might choose Regional Certificates while international travelers gain the most from Global Certificates.

To fully capitalize on elite status, avoid basic economy fares, which are ineligible for a number of benefits, and be sure to add your SkyMiles account number to collect miles when flying with partner airlines. Using co-branded Delta Amex cards also accelerates the number of SkyMiles and MQDs you earn, helping you secure status faster each year.

Complimentary Upgrades

Delta’s complimentary upgrades are a key Medallion perk, with priority determined by Medallion status, fare class, Million Miler status and cardholder status, among other factors.

Upgrade order begins with Diamond Medallion, followed by Platinum, Gold and Silver. Within each tier, passengers on higher fare classes clear before discounted main cabin fares, and Delta Reserve or Delta Platinum cardholders receive additional priority. Similarly, those with Million Miler status will clear before those without it.

Clearance windows vary by your Medallion status:

  • Diamond and Platinum Medallion: Delta first class and Premium Select upgrades can clear up to 120 hours before departure. Delta Comfort upgrades clear shortly after ticketing, and Delta One upgrades clear on the day of departure.
  • Gold Medallion: Delta first class, Premium Select and Delta Comfort upgrades clear 72 hours prior to departure. Delta One upgrades clear on the day of departure.
  • Silver Medallion: Delta first class, Premium Select and Delta Comfort upgrades clear 24 hours before departure. Delta One upgrades clear on the day of departure.

If no seats clear automatically, members remain on the airport standby list up to boarding time.

Companion upgrades are also available when your companion is a SkyMiles member, Medallion member or holds elite status with a partner airline, and is traveling on the same reservation. Keep in mind that companions who hold elite status with a partner airline are eligible for companion upgrades on paid tickets and companion certificates only.

The companion inherits the higher member’s upgrade priority, but availability must exist in the same cabin for both members. Complimentary upgrades apply to first class, Delta Comfort or Premium Select on specific routes, while basic economy fares remain ineligible.

Using Global or Regional Upgrade Certificates (for Platinum and Diamond members) allows confirmed upgrades ahead of these windows, offering the most reliable path to premium seating.

Check out this article to find out how to upgrade your Delta flight.

Sky Club Access Rules

Access to Delta Sky Clubs depends on membership status, ticket type or cardholder status.

Basic economy tickets are excluded, regardless of credentials. To purchase an annual Sky Club membership, you need to have Medallion status.

Members may enter Delta Sky Clubs within three hours of departure or while connecting on same-day flights.

Guest privileges vary by membership type. Executive members may bring up to two guests or immediate family members free of charge while Individual members can bring up to two guests for $50 or 5,000 SkyMiles each, provided capacity allows. All guests must be traveling on a same-day Delta or partner flight and remain with the member inside the lounge.

Credit card access is available through premium American Express cards, including the Delta SkyMiles® Reserve and the American Express Platinum Card® (see rates and fees), as well as The Centurion® Card. However, Reserve cardholders are still limited to 15 visits per year while Amex Platinum cardholders are restricted to 10 visits per year—unless they charge $75,000 to their card within a calendar year.

High-Impact Takeaways and What to Do Next

Whether you’re just joining the SkyMiles program or working toward top-tier Diamond Medallion status, understanding how to use Delta SkyMiles and optimize Delta’s rewards ecosystem is key to getting the best value.

Focus on earning Medallion Qualifying Dollars (MQDs) through Delta flights, Delta Stays and co-branded credit cards while leveraging partner opportunities to accelerate your earnings. Once you achieve Platinum Medallion and Diamond Medallion status, use Choice Benefits strategically.

Despite Delta’s dynamic pricing model, consistent earnings can add up to premium perks that make for a smoother and more cost-effective travel experience every time.
